of Hindu origin (incarnation of Vishnu) but also present among Buddhists, the god Garuda is the equivalent in the air of the Nagas (sea serpent) in the waters where they fight each other
included in the Dewas, Garudas are immense eagles whose superhuman strength is said to be capable of digging up a banyan tree
this mask would have been hand-carried to the face; it was also show-cased in the house to protect the whereabouts and their inhabitants (face mask also used for domestic protection)
